Pile, a Republican from Florence, has spent more than a decade in various school volunteer positions in Northern Kentucky Schools. Pile and Woods meet the criteria, in addition to having years of experience working in or with Kentucky's education system. "Andy Beshear broke the law and only decided to follow it when caught by the Republican Party and the press," Sean Southard, the spokesperson for the Republican Party of Kentucky, said in a statement following the appointments. The latter obligation sparked backlash from state GOP leaders, who pushed Beshear late last week to put a Republican on the board by May 31. To meet state law, Beshear needed to fill both seats with women, one of whom needed to be a racial minority and one of whom needed to be a Republican. Beshear had left two of the 11 voting seats unaddressed since last spring, causing the board to be out of compliance with the diversity requirements.
